St. Lucie 4, Bradenton 3

The St. Lucie Mets walked off with the FSL South Division Title Thursday night at Digital Domain Park. The 4-3, 10-inning victory over the Bradenton Marauders clinched the best-of-three series against the Bradenton Marauders putting the Mets in the Florida State League Championship series for the first time since 2006.

The Mets got on the board first with Stefan Welch scoring from third on an errant throw by Marauders catcher Carlos Paulino giving St. Lucie an early 1-0 lead. The Marauders evened the score in the fourth inning and took a 2-1 lead scoring again in the fifth inning. Pedro Zapata answered for the Mets belting a solo home run in the sixth inning to tie the game 2-2. With the game turned over to the bullpens in the eighth, Bradenton took a one run lead but the Mets battled back with Wilmer Flores singling in Zapata with the tying run. The game headed to extras where Jeff Kaplan allowed one hit over 2.1 innings to set the stage for the late inning heroics. Travis Ozga drew a one out walk and moved to second on a two out walk to Stefan Welch bringing Jefry Marte to the plate. Marte drove the first pitch he saw into right center field scoring Ozga from second with the game-winning, series-clinching run.

Greg Peavey who got the start for the Mets was solid through seven innings allowing only two runs on six hits while striking out six batters. Pedro Zapata led the Mets offensively with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Stefan Welch added two hits of his own but it was a two out single by Jefry Marte that proved to be the difference vaulting the Mets into the FSL Championship series.

The Mets will head to Daytona to take on the Cubs for games one and two of the best of five series. Both teams were the first half winners of their respective divisions. The Mets struggled during the regular season winning only two of eight games against the Cubs. St. Lucie will return home for game three on Sunday night with games four and five also at Digital Domain Park if necessary.
