Christina Hendricks- Superheroine?

Good news for those of you counting down the minutes until voluptuous actress Christina Hendricks squeezes into a Wonder Woman outfit. A series of seemingly unrelated events might end up making this a reality.
Now take idle gossip rag chatter for whatever it's worth, but apparently a rumor had been circulating earlier about Hendricks being one of the leading choices for the always upcoming yet never produced live action Wonder Woman film. When she was asked about it by TV hostess Rachel Ray, Hendricks said "I head that rumor too- I don't know where it got started, but I love it! I’ve been wanting to wear that outfit my whole life! That would be such fun! Let’s put it out there!"

Fast forward to earlier this month, where the buxom redhead got quite a scare attending the 2011 Golden Globes [Heh heh....globes- NANESB!]. Like many other actresses, Hendricks borrowed some expensive jewelry for the awards show- in this case, a pair of 200 carat diamond bracelets as well as a 49-carat emerald set in platinum. Moments before the show started, the actress noticed that one of the bracelets was missing and frantically began asking media and security if they had seen the missing jewelry.

An event worker was eventually able to find it on the red carpet outside and returned it to Hendricks as the show started, but the actress couldn't get the clasp to close properly. So she stashed the newly recovered bracelet in her cleavage before deciding to try to get it back to her publicist.
But security blocked her as she tried to leave the auditorium, as no one is allowed in or out once the show starts. She begged, "Please let me out, I have to give my diamond bracelet to my publicist!" The guard watched wide-eyed as Hendricks pulled the bracelet out from her ample cleavage. He opened the door a crack and she passed the jewels through to her publicist outside.
Besides being one of the luckiest inanimate objects on the face of the earth, the AWOL bracelet was worth an estimated $850,000 by Swiss jewellers Chopard.

Now even to somebody with a high net worth like Hendricks, $850,000 is a pretty sizable chunk of change. Let's say that bracelet was never recovered- her wallet would've taken a pretty big hit [I can't say her reputation would've taken a hit, since this is the same Hollywood that eagerly defends pedophiles, drug users, cop killers and foreign leftist dictators, so what's a little missing jewelry?- NANESB!].

Hypothetically speaking- what's a girl to do?

Live the dream, of course!

Almost as soon as Comcast [NASDAQ: CMCSA] completed their acquisition of NBC Universal, it was announced that a pilot episode for David E. Kelley's Wonder Woman TV series was greenlit.
Wonder Woman will fly this pilot season after all. New NBC entertainment president Bob Greenblatt capped a day of high-profile pilot pickups with a surprise order to David E. Kelley's Wonder Woman reboot. WBTV took Kelley's Wonder Woman spec out to the networks in the first week of January. At the time, NBC was the most interested but, with Greenblatt still on the sidelines, the network couldn't commit to the type of license fee that the studio was seeking in order to do the show Kelley had envisioned, and WBTV decided to shelve the project. With Greenblatt now firmly taking the reins and Kelley just delivering one of the most promising new series for NBC this season, Harry's Law, NBC stepped up to greenlight Wonder Woman. The project is described as a reinvention of the iconic D.C. comic in which Wonder Woman -- aka Diana Prince -- is a vigilante crime fighter in L.A. but also a successful corporate executive and a modern woman trying to balance all of the elements of her extraordinary life. "I had a lot of fun writing it," Kelley said of the script at TCA last week when the project had just been put on hold. "It's a huge project, and it was probably a bit too much to ask anyone to try to chew on it for next season. But I'm confident it will still happen. It's a very complicated piece, which is the most fun thing about it."
OK- so it isn't the live-action movie that had been alluded to, and it's never too late for this project to be a colossal trainwreck. But with that said, wouldn't you rather see it- trainwreck and all- with Christina Hendricks as the titular [hee hee, I said.......ah, nevermind- NANESB!] heroine than say.....Megan Fox?

Sure- the urgent monetary incentive (i.e. the missing platinum & diamond bracelet) isn't there anymore, and it would be presumptuous of me to think that Hendricks would be as concerned about losing an object loaned to her that's close to 10% of her net worth that I would be, not to mention Hendricks would probably have to do considerably more stunt work than she would as Joan Holloway, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Today's Train of Thought- Yellow Streak, Jan 31 2011

Today's train of thought brings us a little splash of color in a wintry Appalachia, as railpictures.net contributor J.B. Egypt Update- Egyptian Army Deploys to Cairo; Ancient Artifacts Destroyed By Looters; Foreigners Start Exodus from Country

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak ordered the Egyptian Army into Cairo over the weekend in an attempt to curb looting and the escalating unrest in the capital city and throughout the rest of Egypt.

Protesters had defied a curfew for the 4th straight night in Cairo while the Army kept the protests mostly confined to Tahrir Square. A spokesman for the Egyptian Military said that they would not fire on protesters peacefully demonstrating, but added they would not tolerate "any act that destabilizes security of the country" or damage property.

With the Army and police dealing with the massive demonstrations or guarding government installations, some Egyptians have taken advantage of the deteriorating security situation. Looting had also broken out in Cairo and other cities across Egypt with young men on motorcycles breaking into shopping centers, restaurants, banks, casinos, private homes and carting away electronics food, alcohol, TV sets, money, jewelry and furniture. Outside the city, the state run TV network reported that car dealerships on the highway between Cairo and Alexandria had been broken into and looted while entire bank branches were abandoned.

Some neighborhoods had set up their own watch groups armed with knives, clubs, guns and metal pipes to ward off looters while boarding up nearby shops and homes in the absence of any police or military presence.

Members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood took advantage of the deteriorating security situation by springing jailed members of both Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood from prison.

But the most infamous example of looters in Egypt occurred over the weekend when nine men entered Cairo's Egyptian Museum through the skylight and beheaded two mummies and stole ancient Egyptian jewelry and masks that were on display. Although the looters were caught by a crowd that was forming a human chain around the museum and the Egyptian Army is now guarding the museum, several historic and irreplaceable artifacts were destroyed by the looters.

Historians and archaeologists are concerned that the police or military are presently unable to protect smaller museums that are home to a number of equally important artifacts.
[Egyptologist Dr.] Hawass said many valuable artifacts have already been taken and some of the country's lesser known museums have been emptied of their treasures, including the one in Memphis — the capital of ancient Egypt, about 19 kilometres south of Cairo.

Hawass said the Coptic Museum, Royal Jewelry Museum, National Museum of Alexandria and El Manial Museum had all been broken into.

He also said he is afraid the ruling National Democratic Party headquarters in Cairo, torched and vandalized by demonstrators on Friday, could collapse and topple onto the 100-year-old Museum of Egyptian Antiquities next door.
The embassies of the USA, India, Canada, Turkey, the UK and other nations in the country have warned residents to avoid travelling to Egypt begun airlifting or making arrangements to airlift citizens out of the country.

A Brief History on Sabermetrics Part II (Hitting)

By Simon Stracher

I am sorry that it took me so long to write up this second part, and there most likely be two or three more posts on Sabermetrics. This post will end the hitting part of Sabermetrics. Enjoy!

1. HR/FB (Home-run/Fly ball)- A players home-run rate (HR/FB) is literally the percentage of home-runs hit out of their total fly balls. Good home-run hitters usually have HR/FB ratios usually between 15%-20%. Weaker ones can have as low as 1%. HR/FB can show you if a player is declining (say his HR/FB rate is the same as before but he is hitting less home-runs), or if a player is getting unlucky or lucky (say if a player is hitting more fly balls, but his HR/FB is lower, therefore making him more unlucky and vice versa). If his HR/FB is getting worse, it can also mean the player is losing power and declining and not getting unlucky. In order to get a player's true HR/FB, you should look at their HR/FB over three years, not one or two.

Context (from www.fangraphs.com):

2. Spd (Speed Score)- Speed score is a statistic that rates a player based on speed and baserunning ability. Different websites use different components, but Fangraphs uses Stolen Base Percentage, Frequency of Stolen Base Attempts, Percentage of Triples, and Runs Scored Percentage. Speed Score is good for evaluating true speed, but far from perfect. Think before you use it.

Context (from www.fangraphs.com):

2010 Speed Scores

3. GB%, LD%, and FB% (Groundball, Line drive, and Fly ball percentage)- GB%, LD%, and FB% are fairly straightforward; the percentage of groundballs, fly balls, and line drives a player hits every time the ball goes into play. The more groundballs you hit, generally the lower your average. The more line drives you hit, the better your average. The more fly balls you hit, also generally the lower your average but higher home-run totals. Groundballs hitters are usually contact hitters, line drive hitters are usually in between power and contact hitters and have better averages, and fly ball hitters usually have lower averages but higher home-run totals and are power hitters. Remember, hitters want to hit line drives and fly balls, while pitchers try to make hitters hit groundballs.

GB%

FB%

4. K% and BB% (Strikeout and Walk percentage)- K% and BB% are the percent of times that a player strikes out or walks in his Plate Appearances. High walk rates are good because it allows players to reach base more and have a higher OBP. Lower walk rates are bad because players don't reach base as much and therefore have a lower OBP. High strikeout rates usually indicate a player is swinging for the fences and is a power hitter. Power hitters also usually have high strikeout rates and walk rates since they swing and miss often but get pitched around by pitchers. You don't want a high strikeout rate, but it is not as important as walk rate. You can still be a very productive hitter with a high strikeout rate (Ryan Howard). Remember, power hitters will usually have a high walk and strikeout rate, while contact hitters will have a low walk and strikeout rate.

Context (from www.fangraphs.com):

BB%

5. Plate Discipline (O-Swing%, Z-Swing%, Swing%, O-Contact%, Z-Contact%, Contact%, Zone%, F-Strike%, SwgStr%)- These plate discipline tools help you determine why someone is striking out more/less and walking more/less.

O-Swing%: The percentage of pitches a batter swings at outside the strike zone.

Z-Swing%: The percentage of pitches a batter swings at inside the strike zone.

Swing%: The overall percentage of pitches a batter swings at.

O-Contact%: The percentage of pitches a batter makes contact with outside the strike zone when swinging the bat.

Z-Contact%: The percentage of pitches a batter makes contact with inside the strike zone when swinging the bat.

Contact%: The overall percentage of a batter makes contact with when swinging the bat.

Zone%: The overall percentage of pitches a batter sees inside the strike zone.

F-Strike% – The percentage of first pitch strikes.

SwgStr%: The percentage of pitches a batter swings and misses on.

Here are the league averages for each of these statistics for 2010:

This concludes the hitting portion of my posts on advanced hitting statistics. Stay tuned for Part III, advanced pitching statistics. I hope this helped you and you enjoyed it.

Iron Horse Update- Kiwis Go for Chinese; Deadly Wreck in Germany; Maine Buys 230-Mile Line; Steam In, Steam Out; New Shortlines on the Canadian Prarie

NEW ZEALAND: The first batch of 6 locomotives from Kiwi Rail's 20 unit order from China's Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock arrived in New Zealand at the end of November.

The locomotives are designated by Kiwi Rail as 'DL' class and rated at 3600 HP each and feature cabs at each end. Since arrival, the DLs will undergo commissioning and crew familiarization at Kiwirail's Hillside shop. The DL's will likely augment or replace older GE diesels, some of which were rebuilt when KiwiRail was part of Australia's Toll Holdings [ASX: TOL]. New Zealand's Rail and Maritime Transport Union has expressed concerns that the Dailan locomotives were too heavy for use on Kiwi Rail and that there are visibility problems with the cabs on each end.

The arrival of the locomotives came a few weeks before Kiwirail announced that China's CNR had beaten out Kiwirail's own Hillside shops for a contract to build 300 new COFC flatcars. Reportedly, the Rail and Maritime Transport Union is considering action along the lines of refusing to unload the remaining incoming DLs from ships in New Zealand to protest the contract being awarded to CNR.
GERMANY: At least 10 people were killed and and 50 injured with the death toll expected to rise after a passenger train collided with a freight train in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt.

Investigators believe the freight train was travelling at speeds of 50 MPH while the passenger train was moving at 70 MPH. The passenger train- HarzElbeExpress (HEX)- was travelling between Magdeburg to Halberstadt when it collided with the freight train carrying lime.

State prosecutors have begun a criminal probe to determine if human error played a role in the accident or if a defect sent the two trains on the same track.

CANADA- NEW BRUNSWICK: The New Brunswick Southern Railway is continuing to rebuild after heavy winter rains hammered the Maritime provinces in mid-December. A 40 mile section of track between McAdam and Milltown, NB on the NBSR 's St. Stephen subdivision was hit with 32 separate washouts, 10 of which had been repaired by the first week of the New Year. CANADA- SASKATCHEWAN: Less than a year after the startup of the Last Mountain Railway between Regina and Davidson, SK an even newer railway has acquired the 82-mile former Canadian Pacific line between Richardson and Stoughton southeast of Regina.

Motive power for the line is a pair of B23-7s from the nearby Last Mountain Railway (nee Southern) which started up operations in late 2009. The Last Mountain will be replacing the recently departed pair of GE's with a trio of former Canadian National/Wisconsin Central SD40-2s.

CANADA- ALBERTA: Grain farmers in the Battle River region of Alberta are bucking a trend of abandoned branchlines and concrete mega-elevators, purchasing an 80km, C$5,000,000 former Canadian National branchline in order to preserve a railway link with the rest of Canada.
The railway has been a fixture of communities such as Forestburg, 180 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, for almost a century. So it was a shock when CN first announced it planned to abandon the route in 2003 at the end of a drought-stricken growing season after grain output — and grain car traffic — fell sharply.

“CN just came and said that was it, they intended to close the line, and we could truck our grain to the central terminals,” said Ken Eshpeter, a farmer in Daysland and chairman of the fledgling Battle River Railway.

So in late 2003, about 180 farmers quickly organized a “producer car group,” which could bypass the terminals and order its own rail cars directly from CN. They began loading directly from trucks or storage bins into grain cars spotted at sidings in hamlets along the route.

Galahad farmer Howard Vincett was among the first.

“We started a buddy system with our experienced farmers helping others who were new to it. Soon we had a lot of farmers doing it,” he said.

“People were meeting and helping their neighbours. It was wonderful to see such a return of that community spirit.”

As local elevators disappeared across the West, farmers had accepted the situation. They bought bigger trucks and drove 50 kilometres or more to the large concrete terminals along the main rail lines, where they could wait for hours in line.

But by using augers at rail sidings, the self-loaders were proving there was an alternative.

So when CN decided in late 2008 that the Battle River line was to be sold for the price of salvage, the co-operative began raising money for a bid.

“We couldn’t allow this wonderful infrastructure to disappear,” said Reg Enright, the railway vice-chairman who operates a farm near Rosalind.

Because of the success with self-loading, a lot of farmers felt the same way, and bought hundreds of the $5,000 “B” shares that allowed them to move five grain cars in the future for the price of the share.

“We told them straight up that this was a risky venture. But if it all failed, we could still sell the rails, and it is the best-quality, 132-pound, main-line steel,” Eshpeter said.

At today’s higher salvage prices, the 80 km of rail would likely be worth more than the $5 million paid to CN.
Battle River Railway Co-op's motive power is a sole former Canadian National SD40-2W, although a 2 stall heated enginehouse is under construction.

MAINE: The State of Maine has finalized the purchase of more than 230 miles of former Montreal Maine & Atlantic (nee Bangor and Aroostook) trackage between Madawaska and Millinocket, ME in November. The MM&A and the state had agreed on the purchase price of $20.1 million and the FRA cleared all legal hurdles for the state of Maine to assume ownership of the lines this month.

Because of mounting financial losses, the MM&A filed to abandon the line between Madawaska and Millinocket as well as branchlines between Squa Pan and Easton, ME and Oakfield and Houlton, ME in Feb. 2010. Rather than permanently cut off rail service to customers in Northern Maine, the state opted to raise funds to purchase the lines and lease them back to the MM&A, although they could subcontract operations to a third party such as Pan Am Railways or the New Brunswick Southern.

STEAM: With 2010 coming to a close, that also meant that it was time to drop the fires on some restored steam locomotives for the 15 year FRA boiler inspection.
Photo- Matt Beisser
CONNECTICUT- Valley Railroad's 1926-built former Birmingham & Southeastern ALCo 2-8-0 #97 made its last run before it was slated for the 15 year FRA inspection in late December. The #97 has been with the Valley Railroad from the beginning, when it started up in the late 1960s on a derelict former New York, New Haven & Hartford branch that ran parallel to the western bank of the Connecticut River.

Although the #97 will be out of service for the foreseeable future, this will not leave the Valley Railroad without steam power. Besides former Aberdeen & Rockfish 2-8-2 #40, the Valley RR also purchased fire-damaged Chinese built 2-8-2 SY #3025 from Pennsylvania's Knox & Kane Railroad in 2008.
Photo- Richard Stevens
WISCONSIN- The clock was winding down on Soo Line ALCo 2-8-2 #1003 in November 2010 as well, as her it was getting near time for her FRA mandated boiler inspection. The 1913-built Mikado ran a series of excursions and photo freights on the Wisconsin & Southern lines in the southern part of the Badger state for the last decade or so.

One of the final runs (before the FRA inspection) of the 1003 featured Polar Express author Chris Van Allsburg working as the 1003's fireman back in late October. The #1003 was also able to serve as power for the WSOR's 'Santa Train' in November.

When not in operation, the venerable Mikado is usually kept at the Wisconsin Automotive Museum in Hartford, WI.
Photo- Jim Kleeman
PENNSYLVANIA- Like Soo Line #1003 and Valley Railroad #97, the time has come for the mandated boiler inspection for Steamtown's Canadian Pacific 4-6-2 'Pacific' #2317. For the last two years she had been relegated to the 'Scranton Limited' trains that operated entirely within the Steamtown complex due to an issue with the trailing truck.

There is some ambiguity as to exactly when the #2317 might steam again. Some have said that Steamtown has put a higher priority on bringing Baldwin Locomotive Works former Eddystone, PA plant 0-6-0 switcher #26 back to service, followed closely by Boston & Maine 1934-built Lima 4-6-2 #3713.

STEAM 2.0- WHAT'S NEW IN 2010 AND BEYOND: Although the fires have been dropped on some big steam in 2010, others locomotives have returned to service after being dormant for decades.

KANSAS- Perhaps the most under-the-radar development as far as steam was concerned turned out to be the successful restoration of Santa Fe Baldwin 4-6-2 #3415 by the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railway in Abilene, KS. The 1919-built Baldwin was taken out of service by the Santa Fe in the late 1950s and donated to the City of Abilene where it was on static display for the last 40 years in Eisenhower Park before the city donated it to the all volunteer A&SV in the late 1990s.

After more than 12,000 volunteer hours, the 3415 was successfully test-fired in 2008 and cosmetically restored to her original appearance by late 2009. The 3415 will operate a few times a month on the A&SV's former Rock Island branchline between Abilene and Enterprise, KS when the railroad isn't using their 1945-built ALCo S1 diesel switcher [she's shown above arriving at Enterprise, KS on Independence Day weekend 2010 before having to run around her train and return to Abilene running tender-first].

Perhaps the oldest steam locomotive to be restored to working order is Southern 2-8-0 #154. The locomotive was built by the Schenectady Locomotive Works (a precursor to ALCo) in 1890 for the East Tennessee, Virginia & Georgia. Four years later, the ETV&G and the Richmond & Danville merged to form the Southern Railway, where the #154 continued to serve he Southern in Eastern Tennessee before being retired and donated to the city of Knoxville, TN where it was put on static display in Chilhowee Park. In 1989, it was given to the Old Smoky Railroad museum before being donated to the Gulf & Ohio Railways in 2008. Gulf & Ohio operates the popular Three Rivers Rambler seasonal excursions in Knoxville with 1925 built former Washington & Lincolnton 2-8-0 already powering some of the excursions.

Thanks to the hard work of the folks at Gulf & Ohio, Southern 154 was back in service and powering trains on the 3 Rivers Rambler in time for her 120th Birthday in July of 2010. The 154 is both the oldest operable Southern locomotive and the oldest known operating ALCo locomotive.
Photo- Jake B
ILLINOIS- A somewhat newer Southern locomotive also returned to service in the Midwest when the Monticello Railway Museum in Illinois completed their restoration of Southern Railway 2-8-0 Consolidation #401 in September 2010.

Along with some of the 1950s vintage streamlined diesels, the 1907 built Baldwin operated a number of excursions of the museum's 15 miles of right-of-way in September 2010. In 1995, a donor for the museum suggested that a working steam locomotive should once again be part of the Monticello Railway Museum, and after doing an inventory, it was decided that the Southern 401 was the most feasible candidate for restoration.

Photo- Ken J Johnson
CALIFORNIA- The Fillmore & Western railway occupies a fairly unique niche. While operating excusrions on a former Southern Pacific branch line between Montalvo and Piru, CA, it also features prominently in films like Inception or Seabiscut. Given its proximity to the Hollywood studios, the lightly used branchline is also just about ideal for movie and TV shoots for any scene involving trains.

To go with their stable of EMD and ALCo diesels is recently restored former Duluth & Northeastern Baldwin 2-8-0 #14, which reportedly will be fired by vegetable oil. Restoration work on the 1913 Baldwin was completed in November 2010, in time for the Fillmore & Western's Christmas excusrions. On January 2nd, the Fillmore & Western had a special excursion pulled by #14 for the volunteers who spent so much time getting her back to working order.

Martin Luther King III buying the Mets

A published report Sunday said Martin Luther King III is interested in buying a share of the New York Mets.

The son of the former civil rights trailblazer, Martin Luther King Jr., and television executive Larry Meli are reportedly part of a group trying to become part owners of the Mets, according to the New York Post.

The paper quotes Meli saying the group wants to purchase 50 percent of the team and that it would be “fitting with the legacy of Jackie Robinson essentially transferring to the Mets.”

Long Island businessman Martin Silver also said he wanted to meet with the Wilpons to discuss buying a piece of the franchise.

Silver, who owns the Georgi vodka brand, said he wants Mets fans to “believe again.”

“We don’t want the Yankees to get all the publicity with all the millions and millions of dollars they’re spending,” he said.

The Mets are apparently under pressure as a result of a lawsuit from the trustee trying to reclaim money for victims of the Bernie Madoff ponzi scheme. On Friday, Owner Fred Wilpon and his son, Jeff, announced they were exploring a partial sale of the team that would raise several hundred million dollars.

Fred Wilpon said the Mets were looking to sell a non-controlling interest of 20 to 25 percent and he did not envision giving up control of the franchise, which his family first bought into in 1980.

Mr. Met has made an official comment on the possible sale of the team, "I like it!"

Quickie All Star Sports Chowdah Break- Bruins Head Into All Star Break Atop Division; Celtics Start West Coast Trip

NHL- After finishing up their West Coast road trip with a 2-0 loss to Los Angeles, the Bruins had time for one more game at the Garden before the NHL all-star break on Wednesday night.

Before packing his bags and heading off to the NHL All Star Game in Raleigh, NC Tim Thomas had 34 saves in Boston's 2-1 win over the Florida Panthers. Brad Marchand and Milan Lucic each had goals for the Bruins as they managed to hold off a late flurry from Florida.

Thomas leads the league with a 1.81 Goals Against Average and a .945 save percentage, and the Bruins enter the All-Star break in third place in the Eastern Conference and 1st in the Northeastern conference. Besides Tim Thomas, burly Bruins defender Zdeno Chara is also heading off to the All Star Game.

The format for this year's NHL All Star game is different- instead of Team North America vs Team Europe or East vs West, two Captains (Erik Staal of the Hurricanes and Nick Lidstrom of the Red Wings) had a draft on Friday night. Zdeno Chara wound up on Team Staal while Thomas was selected for Team Lidstrom.

Chara and Thomas will stay in Raleigh and be rejoined by the rest of the team come Tuesday when they take on the Hurricanes at the RBC Center.

NBA- The Celtics wound up losing a physical Firday night game to the Phoenix Suns by an 88-71, the stage is set for a rematch of last season's NBA Finals on Sunday where the LA Lakers will host the Celtics.

    Jayson Werth's new gig

    By Mike Moritz
    Edited By Jack E. Cody

When Jayson Werth signed the lucrative contract that would keep him in a Washington Nationals uniform for seven seasons for $126 million on December 5, 2010, I was a little surprised to say the least. I really think that Washington overpaid by a lot. But then again, this is the kind of money that the Nationals need to cough up in order to sign a big name player.

I just wish it was not Jayson Werth.

Don't get me wrong, I like Werth. He is a power hitter who gets on base, sees a lot of pitches, and has superb plate discipline. In a single full season, Werth has never hit less than 24 homers, has never had an OBP of less than .363, never seen less than 4.37 P/PA, and has never posted a wOBA that has never been lower than .384. To add to that, his career O-Swing% is just 20.5%, compared to the general 25% average.

Before making my ultimate point, it must be known that Werth was unlucky with his power numbers but, on the other hand, got lucky with his batting average.

His career line drive rate is 21.4% and his career ground ball rate is 37.4%. 2010 was a weird year for him as his line drive rate dropped to a career low 17.5% but his ground ball rate hovered around his career line of 37%. On the other hand, his BABIP was a whopping .352 leading to a great .296 average.

In terms of his home runs, his fly ball rate was ABOVE his career mark at 45.4% (his career average is 41.2%). However, his HR/FB ratio was 14.3%, which was the lowest of each of his full seasons (in 2008, it was 21.1% and in 2009, it was 19.3%). The outcome was still an above average 27 homers, with the extra hits being translated into doubles, resulting in Werth raking in a league leading 46 two-baggers.

Statcorner.com helps us understand how baseball stadiums effect players' hits. It scales LD, GB, FB, IFH (in field hits), K, BB, wOBA, singles, doubles, triples and home runs on a scale of 100 for left handed hitters and righties. Anything that is below 100 has a negative effect on that specific statistic and everything that is above 100 has a positive effect.

Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Werth's former team, has a rating of 120 which means that the park has a significant positive effect on long balls, helping Werth out. Singles and doubles, on the other hand, were rated at 97 and 99, respectively. GB were rated at 101, LD at 103 and FB were 96. In another note, the wOBA in Citizen Bank Park is .331.

The home run rating is a neutral 100 while singles and doubles were rated at 98 and 95, again, respectively.  GBs are 101, LD at 106 and FB are 96. The wOBA for the park is .318.

His career batting average .272. Lets consider last years .296 batting average "lucky", as proven earlier in this post. So let's exclude 2010 and his career batting average becomes .265. I am going to see him as a .275 hitter. Since National Park's singles and doubles are below the 100 average, it would seem decent to think that his singles and doubles (and overall total hits) would go down after the transfer to the nation's capital.

Werth's home run totals should take a hit for sure.

As you read before, National Park's fly balls are 96 and home runs are 100. Citizens Bank Park is also 96 but, again, home runs are 120.

In a 162 game average from year to year, Werth has averaged 25 home runs. But it seems that he is more of  26 to 29 home run guy, despite his 36 homers in 2009.

But since Werth got un-lucky with his homers in 2010, it would seem more likely that he is capable of hitting 30+ homers in a year consistently since his fly rate has been on the rise since 2007. So with that said, he seems to be about a 30-34 home run threat...in Philly.

In D.C., it looks like he is a 25-28 home run guy and a .275 hitter with about 30 doubles.

I can't tell what he will do in perhaps year 3, 4, 5, or beyond in this enormous contract, but my projection for at least this year is as follows:

    .275/.385/.495/.380, 25-30 home runs and 25+ doubles.

His 95 batting average-OBP point differential for his career should bode well for when he gets older.

Joe Namath Biography and Throwback Jerseys

Joe Namath, New York Jets Quarterback
     Joe Namath Biography

When Joe Namath arrived on the national scene, he was the first of the "new breed" of athlete.  He was talented, confident and eager to let people know it.  Gone was yesterday's football hero, the "gentle giant." Here was Joe Namath, glitz, flash and eccentric.  With Joe's good looks and charm, it wasn't long before he gained notoriety off the field as well as on.

Sporting long hair and dating movie stars, Namath showed up on magazine covers and television talk shows. His popularity soon transcended the sport.  "Broadway Joe" had become one of the first celebrities in sports.

At first, the old timers balked at the way Joe Namath presented himself. His expensive fur coats, flashy white cleats and his six figure paycheck he had signed with the Jets (400,000) didn't sit well with them. Eventually, people came to admire his ability to read defenses, throw quickly and accurately and endure the punishment of playing quarterback.  Even with all the hoopla, Joe Namath never lost sight of his primary objective, which was to be the very best he could be. The Jets, went on to win the Super Bowl in 1969.

When Joe Namath retired in 1977, after 13 seasons, 27,663 yards and 173 touchdowns, the game was irrevocably different, and much of that was attributed to Broadway Joe. Football and its players had attained a new celebrity status.

6 Boxes of Topps Supreme purchased and reviewed

Well......I finally succumbed to my itch of wanting to bust open some high value stuff so I paid a visit to my local card shop to see what goodies I could find. While I was able to stock up on some singles that I needed to complete a few sets that I've been working on it seemed like the only thing he had in for football was 3 cases of Topps Supreme and a few boxes of Topps Magic. So I looked at my options and said to myself, "You know it's a risk with these hit or miss boxes". So after mauling it over for 33.7 seconds I splurged on myself for once.

    Here's what I pulled:

    PACK 1
Well now......lookie here.....Finally I have pulled a NY Giants auto.
Eli Manning Patch card auto 38/50. It looks like around the squares where the jersey meets the cardboard there is a slight tint of damage to the red border.
    Drew Brees 63/209
Ray Rice 5/5 ........looks like he's being chased by Ray Lewis for some reason.
LaDainian Tomlinson 112/209 .....who was stuffed in the playoffs like one of Gino's cheesesteak subs down a guy's throat!

    ON TO PACK TWO:

Holy Cow it's a Tim Tebow rookie autograph #9/75...blessings for us all! I thought it was on card auto at first glance but then the sticker finally reflected in the light (like Tebow's HOLY PRESENCE) and I was saddened by that but then it was okay because I felt blessed by the presence of the card and Tim's HOLY STARE. SUCH A DEMONIC STARE!!!
    Hakeem Nicks 138/209
    Colt McCoy rookie 82/209
Emmanuel Sanders rookie 16/62 ....Steelers suck by the way! If I hear "Stairway to seven" one more time around here then some folks are gonna have a few pitchforks stuck where the sun doesn't shine!

    ON TO PACK 3:

WHOA...... a 1/1 Dual Patch auto of Jermaine Gresham and Rob Gronkowski. Jermaine has part of the Reebok Logo and Rob has part of the Patriots (tail portion) logo. BTW TOPPS....good job of picking a photo shot that shows Jermaine's face being partially covered by a football.
Ben Tate rookie 7/209 .......looks like he's about to eat that ball!
Peyton Manning 94/209 .....looks like he's trying to swim
    Andre Roberts rookie10/62

    ON TO PACK 4:

Dan "the man" Marino 35/209 ......OH YEAH....just what we don't need in this set. Another legend player. The guy has been retired for how long??? Enough Already of that crap!
    Randy Moss 49/209
Emmanuel Sanders rookie 10/25 ........WHY did I get a double of him?
Brandon LaFell Rookie quad jersey 3/7

    ON TO PACK 5:

    Mardy Gilyard rookie 30/209
    Aaron Rodgers 33/62
    LeSean McCoy 159/209
Jonathan Dwyer Quad Jersey Card 3/3 (really getting tired of pulling Steelers stuff) LOL!

    ON TO PACK 6:

    Major Wright rookie 30/62
    Joe Flacco 127/209
Wes Welker 1/1 Boarded Printing Cyan Plate
Quad rookie jersey card 2/15 of Gresham, Shipley, LaFell, Edwards.

    THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS:

I would have to say that pulling a $10.00 jersey card out of an $85.00 box left me with a really sour taste in my mouth. It's going to be a hit or miss chance every time you open a box and I knew this going into the situation. I did pull a double of the Emmanuel Sanders rookie card even thought it was a variation..... still out of a case of 8 boxes I should not pull a double of anything in my opinion.

Sticker auto's .......These cards would've been much better with "on card" auto's.

Only a few cards had a slight chipping issue on the back of the cards. All of the cards seemed to have four sharp corners and no border issues on the fronts. However if I'm paying that much for a box of cards I better not have chipping issues!
