Ever wonder what sportcasters mean when the callsomeone a "throwback?" Well, look no further than Lenny Dykstra. He may have played as recently as the 1990's, but by the way he played he would have been a perfect fit with the 1950 Whiz Kids or the old St. Louis Gas House Gang. Gritty, feisty and thirsting to win, he didn't just get his baseball uniform dirty, he tore it to shreds.
Dykstra's approach mirrored that of the throwback old timers in that everything he did, he did for the team. While some of Dykstra's greatest contributions didn't shop up in the boxscores. He would take out the pivot man on the double play as well as anyone. He's one of the toughest hitters to strike out. Dykstra can reach base with a walk, but or base hit. He never gave a pitcher a break, whether he was in the hole 0-2 or ahead in the count.
What did Lenny Dykstra's teammates appreciate most about him? That he was a winner on the baseball field. All those clutch hits with the Mets in 1986, including the game winning home run in game 3 of the NL Championship Series, sealed his reputation as a big game baseball player. Dykstra proved that hard nosed, old fashioned baseball still had a place in the game.
