Ryne Sandberg had a Hall of Fame Career, there is no doubt about that. What it took for him to make his name in baseball and for an organization to give him a chance is another story. When Ryno first reported to spring training camp in 1982 he was told that he didn't have a chance of cracking the starting lineup. He would have to play third base, even though he had only played 3b 4 times before.  This wasn't good news to Ryne, because it can take years to learn the position. Ryne Sandberg only had a few months, and he was a 21 year old rookie at the time.

There was work that must be done. There wasn't time to be nervous. So, instead, of worrying about the things that may have impeded his path to MLB stardom, he just grabbed his glove, nodded his head, and started taking ground balls at third base. With very little experience, Ryno had only committed 11 errors, the 2nd fewest of any National League 3rd baseman.

Cubs management, knowing that they have stumbled across a special player, who thought about the teams welfare, above his own future, rewarded Sandberg and they moved him to second base. He became the first player in MLB history to win a Gold Glove in his very first year at a new position.

Ryne Sandberg shined every time management needed him to rise to meet the expectations that they had for him. In spring training of 1984, they told him that they needed some more power out of his batting stroke. He needed to start hitting for power. Instead, of complaining about management trying to change him, what did he do? He grabbed a baseball bat and started on his new power swing. So, what was the result? Ryne Sandberg won the NL MVP award hitting 19 home runs, 84 runs batted in, 114 runs scored, and a .314 batting average.

Rickey Henderson A's MLB Throwback Jerseys, Baseball Biography

Rickey Henderson Throwback Oakland A's Jerseys and Biography

    Rickey Henderson Cooperstown Throwback Jersey

Rickey Henderson was one of those throwback players that you don't see in today's baseball. This old style retro Rickey Henderson throwback jersey is made by Majestic Athletic Sports Apparel, and officially licensed by MLB.

    Rickey Henderson Biography

Rickey Henderson didn't just tip toe into Major League Baseball, he broke into the MLB running at full speed. In Rickey Henderson's rookie season with the Oakland A's in 1980 he had 100 stolen bases, breaking a long standing record held by Ty Cobb (96 stolen bases). Rickey didn't slow down in the following years either. Two years later he stole 130 bases shattering Lou Brocks MLB record.

When he first came in to the league the "so called" experts thought that his head first slides when he was stealing a base would slow him down. His reckless style of stealing bases did take it's toll. Henderson suffered many injuries that occurred while raising havoc on the bases. Henderson had jammed fingers, bruised wrists, scraped arms, and separated shoulders.

The experts thought that Rickey Henderson's would slow down after suffering so many injuries on the base paths, but Henderson's love of stealing bases never diminished. He kept stealing bases fearlessly and launching himself into harms way. For the next 12 baseball seasons he led the league in stolen bases 11 times! With each stolen base he crept closer to Lou Brock's record.

Rickey Henderson had his chance to dive into the record books in a game against the New York Yankees on May 1, 1991. As Henderson tool his lead off of second base he faked a steal of third base. As he slowly walked back to second he fooled the pitcher into thinking that he wouldn't steal. Henderson then bolted towards third base and launched himself into one of his infamous head first dives and slid in safely. The all time stolen base record was his! He lifted the bag out of the ground and hoisted it over his head in a triumphant manner. After the baseball game Henderson announced to the world that he was the greatest stolen base artist ever. Who could argue with him?

Al Kaline Biography - Tigers Throwback Jerseys

Al Kaline Biography & Throwback Jersey

    Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer

You may be very surprised that one of Al Kaline's most coveted awards in his Hall of Fame career came after a rare off year for the slugging Detroit Tigers outfielder.  Had anyone told you that Al Kaline would enjoy one of his finest moments in Autust of 1968 you would have said they were crazy. Consider that up until that point Kaline had missed six weeks with a broken wrist and only his .287. His 10 hrs and 53 rbi's were his lowest totals since his first full season in the Majors. Kaline's injured wrist forced hiim to give up his regular spot in right field to play first base while his wrist slowly healed.

The upside of this story is that the Detroit Tigers won the pennant behind the extraordinary pitching of Denny McLain and Mickey Lolich. By the time that the Detroit Tigers first World Series in 23 years rolled around, Al Kaline was finally healed from his wrist injury.

In the 1968 World Series the Detroit Tigers were facing the heavily favored St. Louis Cardinals let by their flame throwing ace, Bob Gibson.  Al Kaline proved to the rest of the baseball world what the Detroit Tiger fans already knew. Kaline was a true Major League super star.  Putting his regular season troubles behind him, Kaline focused all of his attention on one objective, and that was to win the World Series.

Detroit didn't get off to a very good start in the 1968 World Series.  The Tigers only won one game in the first four of the series falling behind in the series 3 games to 1. Kaline was always best in the clutch, and with Detroit losing 3-2 in game 5, Al Kaline stepped up to the plate with the bases jammed in the bottom of the 7th and stroked a 2 run single that eventually won the game for Detroit and kept them alive in the series.

In game 6, Kaline stroked his 2nd home run of the World Series in a 13-1 Tigers blowout. Over the course of the entire series Kaline hit .379 and drove in 8 runs and six runs himself. Kaline's offensive output and flawless fielding led Detroit to a 7 game upset over the heavily favored St. Louis Cardinals. It would be Kaline's only World Series Championship season, but one worth savoring forever.

    Al Kaline's Timeline Biography
    • Born : December 19th, 1934 in Baltimore, Maryland
    • Age 12 : Goes 10-0 pitching in South Baltimore Little League
    • Age 15 : Converts to play the outfield by his high school coach. He hits .333 as a freshmen.
    • Age 18 : Kaline hits .488 as a high school senior. He signs with the Detroit Tigers for $15,000 bonus and salary of equal value. Makes Major League debut one week later.
    • 1955 : Hits .340 to win the batting title.
    • 1957 : Kaline captures the Gold Glove award for right fielders in the first year that it was awarded.
    • 1961 : Al Kaline wins the Gold glove for center fielders. Leads the American League with 41 doubles.
    • 1968 : Hits .379 to lead the Detroit Tigers to a World Series Victory.

Joe Namath Biography and Throwback Jerseys

Joe Namath, New York Jets Quarterback
     Joe Namath Biography

When Joe Namath arrived on the national scene, he was the first of the "new breed" of athlete.  He was talented, confident and eager to let people know it.  Gone was yesterday's football hero, the "gentle giant." Here was Joe Namath, glitz, flash and eccentric.  With Joe's good looks and charm, it wasn't long before he gained notoriety off the field as well as on.

Sporting long hair and dating movie stars, Namath showed up on magazine covers and television talk shows. His popularity soon transcended the sport.  "Broadway Joe" had become one of the first celebrities in sports.

At first, the old timers balked at the way Joe Namath presented himself. His expensive fur coats, flashy white cleats and his six figure paycheck he had signed with the Jets (400,000) didn't sit well with them. Eventually, people came to admire his ability to read defenses, throw quickly and accurately and endure the punishment of playing quarterback.  Even with all the hoopla, Joe Namath never lost sight of his primary objective, which was to be the very best he could be. The Jets, went on to win the Super Bowl in 1969.

When Joe Namath retired in 1977, after 13 seasons, 27,663 yards and 173 touchdowns, the game was irrevocably different, and much of that was attributed to Broadway Joe. Football and its players had attained a new celebrity status.
