Casey Stengel Baseball Biography - Photos and MLB Manager Career

Casey Stengel Biography

Historic MLB Career of

The Player, The Manager, The Legend

Casey Stengel, Yankees Photo - MLB Biography
As a baseball player Casey Stengel was a clown on and off the field. So this made Stengel an unlikely choice to manage the most successful team in MLB history.  As a baseball player, he was better known for his jokes than for his baseball intellect.  He once won over a crowd of angry fans by taking off his cap when he came to the plate, allowing a bird he had hidden underneath it to fly away.  People laughed, but nobody took him seriously.

After retiring as a baseball player, Casey Stengel managed for nine seasons in the minors, then got his big league shot with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1934. In three years, Stengel's struggling teams finished no better than fifth and he was let go.

With the Boston Braves from 1938 to 1943, he fared even worse.  Things got so bad that when he was accidentally hit by a taxi and broke his leg, the driver was voted MVP by Boston fans.  Labeled a loser, he was back in the minors by 1944.

The New York Yankees saw something special in the old man.  He had led the Oakland Acorns to the top of the Pacific Coast League in 1948, and the following season, Casey Stengel was wearing pinstripes in the Major Leagues.  The media screamed that he had a poor track record and was over the hill at 58. Stengel immediately shot back in a resilient fashion, "They don't hand out jobs like this because they like your company.  People here think I can produce." Produce, is exactly what he did.

Stengel earned the respect of the players immediately, organizing spring training with military type discipline.  He got the most out of his team by driving home fundamentals in workouts twice a day and by juggling his lineup to keep his players sharp.  Stengel's platooning helped the NY Yankees overcome a plague of injuries and take the 1949 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Over his next 11 seasons, the New York Yankees won NINE more pennants and six titles.  Casey Stengel became one of the most remarkable managers in history. Ultimately in the end, Casey Stengel had the last laugh.

There seemed to be a love / hate relationship with Reggie Jackson, and he wouldn't have it any other way.  Read Reggie Jackson's Biography.

     Reggie Jackson Biography

New York Yankees - Oakland A's - California Angels

Reggie Jackson Black and White Photo - BiographyThe best baseball players stir strong emotions.  They are either adored or despised. Incredibly, Reggie Jackson managed to stir up both emotions at the same time.  No one could stand him, not the fans, not the media, and especially not his teammates. Yet they all admired and respected him for who he was on the baseball field and what he could do as a player. The result was the most famous love / hate relatinship in all of baseball.

Reggie Jackson's home runs were epic, his strikeouts thrilling, and his clashes with the the front office was legendary. "The best thing about being a NY Yankee," Graig Nettles once said, "is getting to watch Reggie play every day.  The worst thing? Getting to watch Reggie play every day."

The fact is, just about everything anyone had to say about Reggie Jackson was true, and he adored every word of it.  Reggie didn't even care when the fans let him have it from the stands. "They don't boo nobodies," he would always say. He loved the limelight and relished being the center of attention. It's no wonder that he did his best work on baseball's biggest stage, the World Series.

In 1973, Reggie Jackson led the Oakland A's to the World Series Championship and won the MVP by sinking the New York Mets with a dramatic home run in the deciding game.  In 1977, he put on a one man show for the Yankees, clubbing five homers against the Los Angeles Dodgers, including three in the final game. The following year he destroyed the Dodgers again with 8 RBI's in 6 baseball games.

"Mr. October", as he was nicknamed,  played in the World Series five times and led his teams to four World Series Championships.  Who could blame Reggie for saying, "The only reason I don't like playing in the World Series is that I can't watch myself play."

Love Reggie Jackson, or hate him, he was indeed a wonder to behold in baseball.  Given his ability to deliver under such intense pressure, it's hard to fault him for being his own biggest fan.
