SoCal Cardinals Scout Team Baseball

This morning I was talking to a friend of mine Mark Alexander from Southern California that his son Dylan made the SoCal Cardinals Scout Team. I was so glad to hear the news but at the same time I had no idea that the Cardinals had scout team in California. I was very intrigued by this so I looked into this.

The "Scout Ball" season runs from September through November each year. In July and August, the So Cal Cardinals invite selected high school players from the California area to attend a day-long workout in Southern California with Cardinals scouts. Players are selected from those who attend the workout, and those players are invited to be a So Cal Cardinal team member. Each year, we tryout on average 300-600 players. The So Cal Cardinals have an excellent reputation with the MLB scouting community and with college recruiters across the United States. Each year, several So Cal Cardinals players are recruited by college programs and sign letters of intent to play college baseball; and each year, several So Cal Cardinals players are also drafted in the MLB First Year Player Draft, held in June. The So Cal Cardinals play in the Southern California Scout League, and play additional games in Arizona and Nevada.

Chuck Fick is the SoCal Cardinals Director and also a MLB Scout for the St.Louis Cardinals. His son Chuckie Fick is the pitching coach, he also plays for the Cardinals Memphis team as a pitcher. Jim Rapport is the fielding coach and Mike Notaro is the hitting coach. Bill Gentry rounds out the team as head coach.

This scout team is a great avenue to show off the skilss of these players and to be seen. The players are also exposed to the draft. This year 26 players from the SoCal Cardinals got drafted:

1 Chris Reed LAD

1 Sean Gilmatin ATL

2 James McCann DET

5 Tyler Glasnow PITT

6 Danny Keller MIL

6 Adam Ehrlich STL

7 Trevor Gretzky CHC

8 Danny Muno NYM

10 Jeff Johnson CLE

11 Alex Gillingham COL

12 Matt Koch MINN

16 Jack Marder SEA

16 Tanner Peters OAK

17 Jesus Valdez LAD

19 Jesse Meaux COL

19 Chris Joyce CINN

20 Martin Medina CWS

21 Austin Davidson BOS

21 Riley Moore PHI

27 Frankie Reed FLA

27 Brian Hernandez LAA

31 Jett Bandy LAA

32 Ryan Hawthorne SEA

33 Steve Selsy CINN

42 Casey Serna CLE

45 Matt Scioscia LAA

If you live in the So. California area and you have a son that has great potential, this is the way to go. Just ask Mark Alexander. His son Dylan plays varsity for the Simi Valley Pioneers as a catcher and now he is on the SoCal Cardinal team. This is a name we must remember because I have a feeling we just may see him in the majors someday. Good luck Dylan!
