Reading 6, Binghamton 2

The Binghamton Mets wrapped up their 20th season with a 6-2 loss to the Reading Phillies today at NYSEG Stadium. The B-Mets ended the year with a 65-76 record and finished fifth in the Eastern Division.

The B-Mets grabbed the early lead in the first against Tyson Brummett. Juan Lagares doubled to right and hustled home one batter later on Brahiam Maldonado’s infield single.

Reading tied the game in the fourth. After three scoreless frames from Jeurys Familia, Brent Clevlen doubled to right. After stealing third, he came home on Matt Rizzotti’s single up the middle.

The R-Phils took the lead in the fifth. Brummett, Michael Spidale, and Ozzie Chavez started the inning with singles to load the bases. Rizzotti’s sent a single through the hole on the right side to bring home a pair and give Reading a 3-1 lead.

The fifth was Familia’s final inning. He allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out four. Robert Carson took over in the sixth and worked a scoreless inning.

Binghamton cut the deficit to one in the bottom half of the inning. Allan Dykstra shot a home run to left field to make it 3-2. The blast was his 19th home run of the season, a career-high.

Reading added insurance in the seventh. After Ozzie Chavez and Carlos Rivero singled, Rizzotti doubled to right to bring home another run. They added two more runs in the ninth on a two-run blast by Brent Clevlen.

Justin Friend entered in the ninth and fanned Dusty Ryan to cap Reading’s win. The win secures second place in the division and a trip to the postseason for the R-Phils. Familia was saddled with his fourth loss and Brummett earned his fourth win.

The B-Mets will kick off their 21st season on April 5, 2012 at NYSEG Stadium. They will take on the Akron Aeros at 6:35pm.
