JOHAN SANTANA TO START FOR THE GNATS FRIDAY

Two-Time Cy Young Award Winner Will Start Game Two of the Southern Division Championship Series in Savannah

Savannah, GA – The Savannah Sand Gnats, in conjunction with the New York Mets, are pleased to announce that two-time Cy Young award winner Johan Santana is scheduled to make a rehab start for the Gnats at Historic Grayson Stadium on Friday night in game two of the Southern Division Championship Series against the Augusta GreenJackets. Gates will open early at 5:30pm, with First Pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.

The left-handed Santana, 32, underwent surgery to repair a tear of the anterior capsule of his left shoulder on September 14, 2010.

“Having a two-time Cy Young Award winner like Johan Santana on the bump Friday certainly adds some extra charge to the playoff atmosphere,” said Sand Gnats team president John Katz. “The Mets sending Santana to Savannah says a lot about their commitment to our franchise and our community, and we appreciate their dedication to our success.”

When Santana dons a Savannah jersey, he will become the first Major League rehab appearance for the Gnats since the team became a Mets affiliate in 2007. Santana won two American League Cy Young awards with the Minnesota Twins in 2004 and 2006 and finished third in the National League Cy Young balloting in his first season with the Mets in 2008. He led his league in ERA all three years, posting an ERA of 2.61 in 2004, 2.77 in 2006 and 2.53 in 2008. Santana, a four-time All-Star, was most recently selected to the National League All-Star team in 2009. He is 133-69 in his career with a 3.10 ERA between the Mets and Twins.

Santana has not pitched in a Major League game since September 2, 2010 when he threw five innings against the Braves in Atlanta. He has made two minor league rehab appearances with the St. Lucie Mets in 2011, the first on July 28 and the most recent on Saturday, September 3 when he held the Palm Beach Cardinals to a run on three hits with two strikeouts without walking a batter.

The Mets acquired Santana from the Twins on February 2, 2008 in exchange for RHP Deolis Guerra, CF Carlos Gomez, RHP Philip Humber and RHP Kevin Mulvey.

The Gnats currently trail the GreenJackets 1-0 in the best-of-three series after a 4-1 loss Wednesday. If the Gnats win Friday night, a decisive game three, for the right to go to the South Atlantic League Championship Series will be Saturday, September 10 at 6:05 pm.
