Regionals Recap

What a weekend it was! We saw the longest game in NCAA history, a 37-6 rout, a slew of upsets, and tons of incredible performances. Here is a regional-by-regional breakdown of this weekend's action, with some looks forward to supers.

Austin Regional
Winner-Texas
2-Army
3-Boston College
4-Texas State
Texas went 3-0, but didn't quite have the dominant showing as expected. Army and Boston College played some gritty games and hung in. The Longhorns will continue to rely on their amazing crop of arms next week against TCU.

Fullerton Regional
Winner-Cal State Fullerton
2-Utah
3-Gonzaga
4-Georgia Southern
The Titans absolutely breezed through this one, outscoring their opponents 41-9 in 3 games. Daniel Renken, Noe Ramirez, and Tyler Pill all turned in fantastic outings while the offense rolled. CSF is firing on all cylinders and looking like a top national championship contender, but you do wonder why they got such a cakewalk of a regional when Irvine got the test of its life.

Baton Rouge Regional
Winner-LSU
2-Minnesota
3-Baylor
4-Southern
The Tigers handled all of their 3 challengers, going 3-0 to take the home regional. Louis Coleman and Anthony Ranaudo pitched well as usual and the Bayou Bengals got good offensive production as well. Kudos to Minnesota for a great season.

Chapel Hill Regional
Winner-North Carolina
2-Kansas
3-Coastal Carolina
4-Dartmouth
The UNC senior class is now 2 wins away from making a trip to Omaha every year of their career. Adam Warren was outstanding yesterday versus Kansas, and the Tar Heels got offense out of Dustin Ackley, Levi Michael, Garrett Gore, and others. They'll welcome the winner of South Carolina/East Carolina to the Bosh next week.

Tempe Regional
Winner-Arizona State
2-Oral Roberts
3-Kent State
4-Cal Poly
ASU pieced together good outings from Mike Leake, Josh Spence, Seth Blair, and Mitchell Lambson and good offense to cruise into a 3rd straight super regional.

Irvine Regional
Winner-Virginia
2-UC Irvine
3-San Diego State
4-Fresno State
Virginia proved that it is one of the best teams in the country, beating the #1-ranked team twice and the nation's top pitcher. The Cavaliers are a balanced team and are clicking at the right time. Watch out for Danny Hultzen, Andrew Carraway, Kevin Arico, Robert Morey, Jarrett Parker, Steven Proscia, Dan Grovatt, and Co. to cause some nightmares in super regionals. At the same time, you can't forget about the UC Irvine. They got the shaft with this loaded regional and should have received an easier path to the College World Series. The Anteaters went 22-2 in conference and were the top-ranked team in the country much of the year.

Norman Regional
Winner-Arkansas
2-Oklahoma
3-Washington State
4-Wichita State
Arkansas got back to its early-season ways with a big 3-0 showing in Norman. 1B Andy Wilkins got the offense going and Fr. LHP Drew Smyly took a no-hitter into the 9th on Sunday.

Gainesville Regional
Winner-Florida
2-Miami
3-Jacksonville
4-Bethune-Cookman
The Gators took this all-Florida regional and will now look forward to Georgia Tech or Southern Miss. Freshman 1B Preston Tucker spearheaded the offense that exploited Miami's lack of depth on the mound. The Gators got steady pitching all weekend.

Fort Worth Regional
Winner-TCU
2-Oregon State
3-Texas A&M
4-Wright State
TCU won its first-ever regional title in impressive fashion, knocking off the Beavers twice and the Aggies once by a combined score of 24-8. Freshman OF Jason Coats got Regional MOP honors.

Louisville Regional
Winner-Louisville/Vanderbilt
3-Middle Tennessee State
4-Indiana
This regional is just too wide-open to handicap, but the top team is still surviving as of Monday; the Cardinals and Commodores will face off in a winner-take all tonight for the chance to go get crushed in Fullerton. Louisville will start freshman Tony Zych while Vandy will dip into its deep stable of power arms to start tonight's game. The Hoosiers and Blue Raiders bowed out after wonderful seasons.

Houston Regional
Winner-Rice/Kansas State
3-Xavier
4-Sam Houston State
Kansas State got a gutsy performance out of A.J. Morris to win on Saturday, but the Owls have used RHP Jared Rogers and LHP Taylor Wall, plus their great offense, to charge back into a decisive game tonight. Expect Rice to take it at home.

Greenville Regional
Winner-East Carolina/South Carolina
3-Binghamton
4-George Mason
We've got a dandy in Greenville. The evenly-matched, homer-happy Pirates and Gamecocks will battle to the end tonight for the regional crown.

Clemson Regional
Winner-Clemson/Oklahoma State
3-Tennessee Tech
4-Alabama
Okie State has taken advantage of its controversial selection to win some games in Clemson. Still, the Tigers have more pitching left heading into tonight's all-important matchup. Clemson got amazing games from freshmen Scott Weismann and Chris Dwyer yesterday. Tennessee Tech won a game against the Jake Smith-less, Kent Matthes-led Crimson Tide to finish third.

Oxford Regional
Winner-Ole Miss/Western Kentucky
3-Missouri
4-Monmouth
Chic sleeper pick WKU has ridden a tremendous outpouring of offense to a pivotal matchup against the Rebels. Either team has a shot to win this one. Mizzou was defeated in both games that Kyle Gibson didn't pitch in.

Tallahassee Regional
Winner-Florida State
2-Ohio State
3-Georgia
4-Marist
The Seminoles overpowered the competition all week. OFs Mike McGee and Tyler Holt, SS Stephen Cardullo, 2B Jason Stidham, and 3B Stuart Tapley annihilated pitchers over the 3 games and FSU's young rotation of Sean Gilmartin, Brian Busch, and McGee showed signs of coming together and really being pretty solid. The 'Noles will face Arkansas next weekend.

Atlanta Regional
Winner-Georgia Tech/Southern Miss
3-Elon
4-Georgia State
GT coach Danny Hall made a curious decision to use ace Deck McGuire against Georgia State and go with lesser pitchers against the 2 and 3 seeds, but the Yellow Jackets have bashed their way back to force a final game tonight against the Golden Eagles.
