The Rules For The Rule 5 Draft

  • The Rule 5 draft is held annually at the end of baseball's Winter Meetings in December, and its purpose is to prevent teams from loading up on talented minor leaguers who would otherwise have a chance to play in the big leagues. As the Washington Nationals' director of player development Doug Harris indicates, it's a good sign for your organizational depth if other teams are fishing in your minor league waters.

  • Before officially becoming known as the Rule 5 draft in 1965, there were similar systems in place dating to the 1940s that allowed teams to pluck foes' minor league talent. While not known then as a Rule 5 pick, Roberto Clemente was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in a November 1954 “rookie draft” after spending that season mostly as a bench player for the Brooklyn Dodgers' AAA affiliate in Montreal.
