Sadiq Rahman emailed to me: Hey Mack, I hope you are enjoying the fact that neither the Yankees nor the Phillies will be in the World Series this year. As I am looking at the 2012 mock drafts, I hope the Mets can land one of two guys, Mike Zunino and Victor Roache. Zunino would be our future star catcher and Roache would give us a legit power bat in our system (Aka Ryan Howard) Do you think this is possible? What are their MLB comparisons? Who do you want the Mets to get?
Mack: Hey Sadig.
It’s funny. I was driving today and thinking about the fact that there is a certain amount of enjoyment knowing that the Marlins, Caps, Braves, Phillies, and Yankees are out of the playoffs. Makes the Mets look like less of a failure.
The first round is set and the Mets have the 12th pick. Sadly, it looks like Mike Zunino will be long gone, but, the season hasn’t even started and anything can happen.
I looked back to 2010 at this time and I had compiled 13 mock drafts at this point in the off-season. Every one of them had RHP Anthony Reanudo as the first pick. Last year, I had compiled 9 mocks at this point and every one had LHP Matt Purke as the first overall pick.
Zunino is one of those rare catching prospects with good defensive skills, a strong arm and plus-plus projected power.
Now, Roache could be around. It will be interesting to see how he plays the outfield this season at Georgia Southern. It’s down the road from me, so I’ll be at multiple games he plays. Obviously, the Mets don’t need him at first base, but his bat would be hard to pass on if he’s still around when the 12th pick comes up.
The comparison for Roache has been Justin Heyward, which isn't saying as much as it meant a year ago.

June’s a long way off.
