Cardinals Ink Deal with Jaime Garcia

The Cardinals have scheduled a news conference for 12:30 p.m. CT at Busch Stadium, during which time they are expected to announce that they have agreed to a four-year extension with Jaime Garcia that will keep the left-hander under contract through at least 2015.
SI.com's Jon Heyman reported via Twitter that a deal, worth a guaranteed $27.5 million with two option years also included, is done.

General manager John Mozeliak and Garcia both addressed reporters on Thursday, and neither confirmed nor denied that discussions were being or had been held.
"I can tell you that any contract discussions that we have with any player will be done privately, and when we have an announcement, we'll have an announcement," Mozeliak said.
In a media advisory sent out Wednesday morning, the team said only that a news conference with Mozeliak had been called, with no details of what would be announced.
Garcia, who turned 25 on Friday, is in his second full year in the Cards' rotation. The left-hander is 9-3 with a 3.22 ERA, 100 strikeouts and 32 walks in 117 1/3 innings this year, after making his Major League debut in 2008. He solidified his position in the bigs in 2010, when he went 13-8 with a 2.70 ERA.
The reported extension covers Garcia's three years of arbitration eligibility as well as his first potential year of free agency. The option years would cover his second and third years of potential free-agent eligibility.
Garcia was a 22nd-round pick in the 2005 Draft, and finished third behind San Francisco's Buster Posey and Atlanta's Jason Heyward in balloting for the 2010 National League Rookie of the Year Award.
