The St. Louis Cardinals were today awarded the waiver claim of right-handed pitcher Bryan Augenstein of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Augenstein, 24, went a combined 6-9 with a 6.49 ERA in 25 games (22 starts) with Reno (AAA) and Mobile (AA) this past season, making all but three of his appearances with the Triple-A Aces of the Pacific Coast League.
The 6-6, 230-pound Augenstein fanned 110 batters in 129.0 innings pitched last season and walked just 38. He was rated by Baseball America in 2010 as the Best Control Pitcher in the Diamondbacks' organization. In 2009, Augenstein was 5-0 with a 0.99 ERA in nine starts for Mobile before making his Major League debut on May 13 at the age of 22.
The former University of Florida standout (2005-07) was a 7th round selection by Arizona in the 2007 amateur draft, and he was a Midwest League (A) All-Star in 2008.

The Cardinals were notified in the past week that prized international pitching prospect Carlos Martinez (nee Matias) has received a work visa and will be eligible to join the organization this coming spring, a club official confirmed.
The approval comes after an investigation by Major League Baseball and the U.S. consulate, and it cements the $1.5 million bonus agreed to with the Cardinals.
Martinez, who was known as Carlos Matias when the deal was originally struck, went 3-2 with a 0.76 ERA in 12 starts for the Cardinals' affiliate in the Dominican Summer League.
The 19-year-old righthander was eligible to play for the DSL team during the investigation into his paperwork, an investigation that resulted in his name change.
Farm director John Vuch said that Martinez will be earmarked for a domestic affiliate next season, and his performance at spring training will determine the level.
