Cardinals Rule 5 Draft Ben Jukich

The Cardinals selected AAA pitcher Benjamin Jukich from Cincinnati.

Jukich was a 2006 draft pick of the Oakland A's (13th round, same draft as Allen Craig and David Freese). The Reds acquired Jukich in June 2007 (when he was first available to be traded, right after the 2007 draft) to complete an earlier trade that sent OF Chris Denorfia to the Athletics.

Of course, Rule 5 requires that if Jukich does not make the Cards 2010 roster, he must be offered back to the Reds (and pass through waivers, where anyone can claim him for $25,000 before he can go back to AAA).

Jukich, primarily a starting pitcher, has a career minor league record of 34-19 with a 3.93 ERA and a 1.369 WHIP. Last season he had a good walk/innings ratio (2.97 every 9 innings), and over his pro career Jukich has a strikeout rate of 7.65/9 IP.

He was 11-6 with a 4.10 ERA for Louisville in 2009, which plays in the International League. He started 17 games, relieved in 12.
