Congrats to Berkman, Holliday and Molina !

Congratulations to Lance Berkman to be voted to the All Star Game in Arizona July 12. The players picks go to Matt Holliday and Yadi Molina. I also extend more cheers to University of Missouri's Aaron Crow for being picked by Ron Washington to round out the pitching staff.

Cardinals Sign Four From International Draft

St. Louis signed two 16-year-old left-handed pitchers: Dewin Perez (6-foot, 175 pounds) from Cartagena, Colombia, and Alirio Negrette (5-foot-11, 176 pounds) from Maracaibo, Venezuela, as well as 16-year-old Jose Godoy, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound catcher from Maracaibo, Venezuela. The Cardinals also signed Eliezer Alvarez, a switch-hitting shortstop from Santiago, Dominican Republic. Alvarez, 16, stands 5-foot-11 and weighs 165 pounds.

Perez and Godoy are the best in the group of players. Baseball America reported that Perez received a bonus of $450,000 and that Godoy will receive $200,000.

Along with those four players, the Cardinals also signed righty Luis Arias (6-foot-3, 180 pounds) to what the team called a 2012 future services contract. Arias, 17, is from Bonao in the Dominican Republic.

All agreements are pending the passing of a physical, MLB background checks and the players' ability to obtain U.S. visas.

According to Jeff Luhnow vice president of scouting and development, this group of  young players  are good enough to be added to the Cardinal organization.

Today's Train of Thought- Peace Through Superior FireHorsepower

Today's train of thought- perhaps unsurprisingly- brings us not only north of the border, but about as far north as one can get on the North American standard gauge railroad network (while Fairbanks, AK would be further north, railcars moving to and from Alaska actually have to travel by ship). Around a hundred years ago, it was determined that the Peace River region in northwestern Alberta was one of the few places remaining for settlers which could support agriculture under the dominion of Canada's land grants. The only problem was that there was no rail link to the rest of Canada, so a series of competing lines were awarded charters to build lines radiating north and west out of Edmonton. After WWI, many of these lines were struggling financially or incomplete and after a series of lease agreements with the province. Alberta would then continue to group these railroads under the Northern Alberta Railways umbrella and the line to Dawson Creek, BC would serve as the railhead to the Alaska Highway construction project following US entry into WWII. The NAR would see some postwar traffic, but it began to taper off when Pacific Great Eastern (BC Rail's predecessor) built a line into Dawson Creek from the south.

Already half owned by Canadian National, the NAR would cease to exist as a separate entity when CN purchased a controlling interest in NAR in 1981. In the late 1990s, much of the NAR lines were targeted for divestiture by the CN, only to have the separate entities (mostly operated by Rail America, Savage Rail Services and CANDO) be reacquired by 2007.

Here, railpictures.net contributor Tim Stevens caught CN SD40 #6001 leading a pair of battered GP40-2LWs as they cross a trestle in Peace River, AB with a slightly overpowered local bound for the Daishowa Paper mill west of town on August 29, 2008.

Also to the west of town is the junction where the line to Hines Creek, AB meanders west while the line to Hay River, NWT heads north. Hay River is terminus for the northernmost standard gauge line in Canada.

I thought I'd close out Canada day with this.

Panda Saves Wilson's 2nd Straight Blunder

After a really weird series in which the Giants dominated the Cubs on Tuesday and swept the double header with ease, only to go on and get shut down in the final two games of the Series to split, and Friday nights game was very similar to that of one of the last 2 Cards games, only the Giants came out on top of this one.

Both offenses were really irrelevant, though the Giants collected 11 hits and Detroit 7, they only scored 3 runs between them, with the Giants taking it, 2-1. It certainly wasn't an easy journey though, to say the least. Like against Ryan Dempster and Carlos Zambrano, the Giants lineup was unable to string together hits. They got some hits, but they spread them out, then hit into a double play and really were unable to come up with that big hit with a runner in scoring position. All except for Pablo Sandoval that is (2 RBI on the night). They did carry a 1-0 lead into the 8th but Brian Wilson blew save #2 in as many days and looks a little over-worked and desperate for the All-Star break (and no, I'm not at all worried about him). The Panda, on the other hand, came up huge Friday night in a game in which he hit 2 doubles and drove in 2 runs, including the eventual game-winning, RBI double in the top of the 10th. Nate Schierholtz added an RBI-walk with them loaded up off of a rattled Jose Valverde to drive him out of the game, and it was another comeback for the comeback kings, where once again, pretty much all the guys got into the action in some way or another. Neither Huff nor Brandon Crawford got hits, but Huff had a big walk in the 10th and Crawford was on three times the same way, including driving in the 4th Giants run (Crawford is improving 10-fold at the plate before out eyes ladies and gentlemen). So the Giants only needed a few knocks here and there, and certainly took advantage of the late mistakes made by the Detroit bullpen.

As far as the Giants pitching, it was good all week in Chicago, and Madison Bumgarner picked right up where Lincecum, Cain and Zito left off.The 21 year-old lefty went 7 1/3 strong innings, allowing just walk which ended up turning into the 1 run the Tigers scored, although it came in with Brian Wilson on the hill. Just goes to show you what walks do to pitchers, even if they aren't giving up hits, they come back and bight you in the tail! It cost MadBum his 5th win and instead he got stuck with a no decision and stays stuck at 4-9 despite a strong 3.65 era and about 8 K's per 9 innings. That's strong for a 21 year-old, period, don't even look at his record, just look at all his other stats. A left-handed horse who's set to go 200+ innings and sport and era in the mid-3'rs is a rare bread. Just think about what he'll be doing 4-5 years down the line when he hits his prime and really knows how to pitch. They say he already throws like a 10 year vet and is a student of the game, so this guy is just going to get better. He'd certainly be on my "off-limits" list as far as tradeable Giants players are concerned and I think Sabean and Tidrow are well aware of that. Not that I really want to deal him, if someone in the rotaion has to go, it's gotta be Vogelsong or Sanchez. "The V" has a value that's at an all-time high, and could possibly bring in some stud bat. I do believe he'll be free at the end of the year anyway, and the Giants have Zito and Sanchez with Wheeler and Surkamp knocking on the door. Again, not advocating dealing an arm, but the 3 guys that are off limits need to be Cain, Timmy and MadBum.

Well folks, the calendar has officially turned to July, and the Giants sit 2.5 (2 or 3 depending on the D-Back outcome tonight). With only a few weeks until the trade deadline, The Giants have been quiet, but I don't think it will stay that way. They could use a back-up middle infielder, a la Jason Carroll, or preferably a starting middle infielder or corner outfielder. I also think they're OK with going with Stewart and Whiteside behind the plate until Hector Sanchez is ready.

So, who are some middle infielders and outfielders who could be available in the next few weeks? Here are just a couple of names who Sabes very well could be entertaining, if not as I type, then certainly in the coming weeks, I can guarantee you there's more than a few names here on the Giants board too, now obviously, the Beltran's and Reyes' can be had, but it would definitely cost the Giants, but here we go:

SS Jose Reyes, OF Carlos Beltran, OF Adam Lind, SS Alexi Ramirez (if/when ChiSox go into fire-sale), 3B/OF Alex Gordon, OF Hunter Pence (would cost the farm, but attainable), SS Hanley Ramirez (see Pence) 1B Carlos Pena, OF Carlos Quentin, 2B Brandon Phillips,
3B/1B Aramis Ramirez (Pablo/ARam to 1B, Huff to LF if needed for offense), SS J.J. Hardy, 1B Gaby Sanchez, OF Bobby Abreu, OF/1B Carlos Lee (if Houston would take on Rowand and Giants worked out a money deal), 2B Dan Uggla (If ATL falls out and sells, great 1 year stopgap), OF/IF Michael Cuddyer, 2B Aaron Hill, C Ramon Hernandez, OF Alfonso Soriano (see Carlos Lee), 2B Omar Infante, OF Melky Cabrera, 2B/OF Adam Kennedy, IF Jeff Baker, 2B Alexi Cassilla, 2B Jeff Keppinger, OF Jeff Francoeur, 2B Chris Getz, OF Josh Willingham, 2B Orlando Hudson, C John Buck, C Ivan Rodriguez...

There will be many more names that surface in weeks to come, but these are just some players who could will be available and could fill immediate, and some long-term, needs for the Giants and provide upgrades to their position offensively!

Highway of Heroes- A Canada Day Tale From Not Another New England Sports Blog

Photo- Military Mom At Home
In honor of Canada Day today, I thought it would be appropriate to look into the Highway of Heroes phenomenon in the province of Ontario.

For the Canadian military, it is standard practice to have an autopsy performed on any serviceman or woman killed in the line of duty. The bodies of Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan are flown to the CFB Trenton Air Force Base and then driven about 100 miles to the west where the autopsy is performed at the Centre for Forensic Sciences in Toronto.

The procession has been taking place since 2002 and is always given a police escort the entire way. Much of this journey includes Ontario Highway 401, a freeway sometimes known as the Kingsway.

With the very first of the casualties being repatriated one final time, Pete Fischer- a photographer for Northumberland Today- noticed a crowd of about 30 onlookers, including a pair of policemen, gathered on an overpass and saluting as the hearses made their way down the 401. From there, the crowds from the townships and counties the procession passed through would steadily grow. Canadian flags, handmade signs and ribbons would adorn some overpasses while police officers or firefighters in uniform would park their vehicles alongside the 401 or an overpass and salute the procession.

In his bid to have the province officially recognize the Trenton-Toronto stretch of the 401 as the Highway of Heroes, Fischer recounted:
Every person who stands on a bridge will tell you it’s a feeling like no other. As you wait, you talk with people who have been there before, who you’ve come to know. People smile, share feelings, talk about how many times they’ve stood on various bridges. It’s a mix of pride and sadness.

When the convoy of vehicles is seen approaching, murmurs in the crowd can be heard: “Here they come.” There’s silence as people get ready. Then, there’s a sudden sea of arms waving Canadian flags, wanting to let family members in the procession know we are there for them, that we share their pain and are proud to be Canadian.

It’s not unusual to see a soldier’s hand waving a beret from a hearse, or a family member waving from a limousine, to acknowledge the people on the bridge. Those waves are simple gestures, but more than enough for everyone on a bridge to know in that split second that everyone has made a connection to the people in those vehicles.

Rain or shine, an impromptu, grassroots honor guard is present along ramps and overpasses of the 401 to pay their respects for the fallen one final time.

In August 2007, those advocating for official recognition got their wish as the province unveiled new signs along the 401 designating the 100-mile stretch the Highway of Heroes.

More recently, a stretch of the Trans-Canada highway through British Columbia was also re-named the Highway of Heroes at the urging of the Royal Canadian Legion, veterans and family members of the more than dozen BC natives killed in Afghanistan.

Keep in mind that aside from the Winter Olympics or Don Cherry, Canadians by and large tend to shy away from wearing their patriotism on their sleeves. I have nothing else to add other than I thought that was a very moving and sincere gesture by the folks living in some of these towns along the 401 to pay their last respects to Canada's fallen soldiers.

Sports Chowdah Update- Cole Burner; Anybody Else Feel A Draft?

Christopher Pasatieri/Getty Images
MLB: After stumbling in the first two games, the Red Sox were able to salvage Game 3 against the Phillies and even managed to literally knock Philly starter Cole Hamels out of the game. After a scoreless duel with Jon Lester, Philly manager Charlie Manuel made the decision to pull Hamels after the starter took an Adrian Gonzalez line-drive off of his glove hand in the top of the 4th. Hamels reportedly had a large bruise to show for it, but Manuel wasn't going to take any chances with the starter.

The Red Sox managed to break the scoreless deadlock with a pair of RBI singles- one off the bat of Drew Sutton and the other from Jacoby Ellsbury- off of David Herndon in the top of the 5th. This was followed up by two solo homers from Jason Varitek and one from Dustin Pedroia.

Jon Lester came up pretty big against a potent Philly offense, allowing two hits and two walks and striking out five in 7 shutout innings of work. After Bobby Jenks scuffled in his second game back since returning from the DL, giving up a 2-run homer off the bat of Phillies 1B Ryan Howard, Papelbon came in for a 2-out save in the bottom of the 9th to secure the 5-2 win for Boston.

From there, the BoSox will travel to the Lone Star state for their second-ever sojourn to Houston. Tim Wakefield (4-3; 4.54 ERA) gets the start against Astros righty Bud Norris (4-6; 3.36 ERA) on Friday night.

NBA: The Celtics season has been over for awhile, and with a lockout underway the 2011-2012 season is in doubt as well. That's not to say the C's haven't been wheeling and dealing, however. In a draft day trade with the New Jersey Nets, the Celtics traded for Purdue's JaJuan Johnson in exchange for Providence's Marshon Brooks and a 2nd round pick in the 2014 draft.

NHL: The 2011 NHL draft last week officially closed the book on the 2009 Phil Kessel trade with the selection of OHL defenseman Dougie Hamilton. Hamilton was the 9th overall selection in the NHL draft- like last year's draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs had agreed to trade their 1st round draft pick to Boston in exchange for Kessel.

ELSEWHERE IN THE NHL: Paul Kariya, the Anaheim Ducks first-ever draft pick who started out in 1993, announced his retirement this week.

*It was made official at the draft when the former Atlanta Thrashers drafted OHL Center Mark Scheifele in the first round- the new NHL franchise in Winnipeg will resurrect the Jets name.

Just a bit of idle speculation on my part, but with Carolina, Florida, Washington and Tampa Bay having to travel to Manitoba several times a year to play a 'divisional opponent', realignment seems inevitable. What would probably make the most sense geographically is to have Nashville take the Thrasher's place and have them take Nashville's place in the Central but its possible for the league to move a team from the Northwestern division into Nashville's place in order to arrange the Jets playing the Oilers, Flames and Canucks on a more regular basis.

UPDATE: With not even the first full day of free agency in the NHL gone, the Philadelphia Flyers have announced a 1 year deal with Jaromir Jagr and a five year deal with former Penguins forward Maxime Talbot.
