Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson has been placed in hospice care in his California home due to complications from dementia, his family said in a statement released Wednesday.
Anderson, 76, had successful stints as manager for both the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers.
"We are very sad to hear the news of Sparky's failing health," said Reds president and CEO Bob Castellini in a statement. "Every day here we are reminded of his contribution to the success of this proud franchise. The Reds' family offers its prayers and support to Sparky and his family during this difficult time."
Anderson led the Reds from 1970-1978, guiding them to four National League pennants and World Series titles in 1975 and '76. He was then manager for the Tigers from 1979-95, winning a World Series title in 1984.
Anderson's teams went 2,194-1,834 in his 26 years of managing. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000 by the veterans' committee.
