LaRussa Out For Tonights Game

St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa will miss his team's game tonight at Wrigley Field because he is having his infected right eye further examined.

St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa will miss his team's game tonight at Wrigley Field because he is having his infected right eye further examined.

La Russa, who has been bothered by a viral infection for more than a month, visited the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Monday to have the eye checked and for a regular physical. His right eye has been swollen shut at times, and the area around it has been discolored and puffy.

With the condition showing little improvement, La Russa stayed in Arizona for a second day, and the Cardinals said he would not be able to get to Chicago in time for tonight's game. In a statement, the team added that La Russa's status for the remainder of the week has yet to be determined.

La Russa, 66, has the Cardinals atop the NL Central this season, his 16th in St. Louis. Bench coach Joe Pettini is expected to serve as manager in La Russa's absence.
